Windows XP Pro/Home Service Pack 2 from Microsoft
Verifying that you have SP2
installed on your XP Pro/Home Computer
Right
click on the “My Computer” icon, then click on “Properties”
Under the “General”
tab read what is says under “SYSTEM”
1.
Use the Windows
Update and install SP2 from Microsoft Update Website
2.
ActiveX Settings:
a.
Open
Internet Explorer
b.
Click
on “Tools” then “Internet Options”
c.
Choose
the “Security” Tab
d.
Click
on the “Custom Level” button
e.
Then under these
“Setting Headings” put the option to
“Enable”
i.
ActiveX controls
and plug-ins
1.
Automatic
prompting for ActiveX controls
2.
Binary and script
behaviors
3.
Download singed
ActiveX controls
4.
Download unsigned
ActiveX controls
5.
Initialize and
script ActiveX controls not marked as safe
6.
Run ActiveX
controls and plug-ins
7.
Script ActiveX
controls marked safe for scripting
8.
Click “OK” and “OK” or “Apply” to close
“Internet Options”
3. Reboot click START; choose Turn Off Computer; then select RESTART; then click OK
4.
Once
PC has restarted click on “Start” “Control Panel” “Add/Remove Programs”
5.
Uninstall ALL
Adobe programs:
a.
Adobe Reader (any
and all previous versions including 6.01)
b.
Adobe PhotoShop
c.
Adobe Atmosphere
Player
d.
Adobe Download
Manager
i.
*NOTE* Not all of these may be on your PC, but if so
then remove them
6.
Reboot click START;
choose Turn Off Computer; then
select RESTART; then click OK
7.
Once
the PC has restarted open the Internet Explore and Go to www.adobe.com
8.
Download the free
Adobe Reader from their website:
a.
Click on the “ Get Adobe Reader ” box
b.
On the next
window choose your:
i.
Language (English)
ii.
Platform (Windows XP)
iii.
Connection Speed
(Dial-up or Broadband)
c.
Then step 2 of 2
should show up
d.
Make sure there
is a checkmark in “Download Full Adobe
Reader …..”
e.
The other
checkboxes are optional!!!??? You do
not have to have these.
f.
Then scroll to
bottom of page and click on the “Continue”
button
g.
On the next
window just click on the “Download”
button
h.
In the new window
that opens; when given an option to “Open”
“Save” or “Cancel” click OPEN (this
will install it directly from the Adobe website)
i.
Follow the
install instructions by clicking “Yes
and Next” thru the next few windows
9.
Reboot click START;
choose Turn Off Computer; then
select RESTART; then click OK
a.
Once the PC has
restarted open Adobe and agree to the Licensing Agreement then close Adobe
10.
Redo all Internet
Explore Settings: As listed below:
a. Open the Internet Explorer
b. On the Internet Explorer toolbar click on “Tools” and “Internet options”.
a. On the window that appears click on the “Delete Cookies” button and answer
yes.
b. Then click on the “Delete Files” button and click yes, (this empties the Temporary
Internet Files).
c. Go to “Settings”
button and put the check (green dot) to "Every visit to this page".
d. Find "Amount of Disk Space to
Use" and move the slider bar to the far left about 1mb, once done click “OK”.
e. Then Click on the “Clear History” and answer yes.
f.
After
that we want to Click on the “Security”
tab
g. Then the green “Trusted Sites” circle
h. Then just below that the “Sites” button will be available now
Click on that
i.
In
the first text box type: https://www.seasweb.net
j.
Then
click on the “ADD” button this
should move it to the box below
k. After that UNCHECK the box that says “Requires server verification” then Click
“OK”
l.
Now
at the top lets Click on the “Advanced”
tab
m. Scroll all the way to the bottom (this
should bring you to) the “Security”
Section
n. The option second from bottom should read “Warn
if Changing between secure and not secure mode”
o. Make sure this is UNCHECKED
p. Then close the Internet Options window by
clicking on “OK” or “APPLY”, so the settings take effect,
and close Internet Explorer.
11.
Check SP2
Security Settings and make sure “ALL are off” by doing the following:
a.
Click on “Start” “All Programs” “Accessories”
“System Tools” “
b.
Click on “Windows Firewall”
c.
Here we want to
change the Option (green dot) to the option “Off”
d.
Click “OK” this close the “Windows Firewall”
window
e.
Then Close the
“Windows Security Window” by clicking on the “X”
12.
Double check
Network Connection “Local Area
Connection” that it is not fire walled by doing as follows:
a.
Click on “Start”
b.
Then “RIGHT click” on “My Network Places” and choose “Properties”
c.
Then “RIGHT click” on the connection “Local Area Connection” (or the name of the connection that you use
to access the web) and choose “Properties”
d.
In the next
window choose the “Advanced” tab here
you will have one of these 2 windows (this
depends on the XP version):
i.
Internet Connection Firewall (here uncheck that check box) this turns off the
firewall setting
Or
ii.
Windows Firewall click on “Settings” and set
the option (green dot) to “OFF” then
click “OK”
e. Click on “OK” to exit out of the
Properties window
13. Reboot click START; choose Turn Off
Computer; then select RESTART;
then click OK
14. Once the PC has restarted open the
Internet Explore and in the address
bar type https://www.seasweb.net/”your state then district” if this
does not work then use https://67.18.140.9/”your state then district”
15. Then click on “Favorites” and “Add to
Favorites” if it asks to replace it go ahead
16. Check Windows Explorer, “Tools” “Folder Options” “File Types”
and check that “PDF” is associated
to Adobe 6.0
17. POP-Blocker Enable/Disable
a. Open Internet Explorer
b.
Click
on “Tools” then “Internet Options”
c.
Choose
the “Security” Tab
d.
Click
on the “Custom Level” button
e.
Scroll
to the “Heading” “Miscellaneous” under look for “Use Pop-up Blocker”
i.
Choose
“DISABLE”
18. Reboot click START; choose Turn Off
Computer; then select RESTART;
then click OK
19. To remove Windows Journal Viewer do the
following:
a. Click on “Start” “Control Panel” “Add/Remove Programs”
b. Look for “Microsoft Windows Journal Viewer”
c. Click on it so it is highlighted
d. Click on Remove
20. Reboot click START; choose Turn Off
Computer; then select RESTART;
then click OK
21.
GoogleToolbar
If
the ‘Google Toolbar’ is installed on your pc we need to change some settings
a. On the Google toolbar click on the “Options” button
b. Under the “Accessories” Section
i.
Uncheck
“Pop-up Blocker”
ii.
Uncheck
“AutoFill button”
iii.
Click
“OK or Apply” and close all Internet Explorer Windows
